Revisiting Vlora

For the first time since getting Ellie's passport in December 2006, we revisited the city we called home for nearly 4 weeks that eventful month. We wanted Mom and Dad to see where Ellie had lived and where we had such a significant time in Ellie's adoption journey. It was a long, hot drive from Elbasan (nearly 3 hours) and I was inwardly hoping we wouldn't be so tired that we would regret it once we finally arrived. However, once we drove through the city and got to the shore, the long drive felt like a distant memory and our eyes took in the sparkling waters of the sea. Wow -- I forgot how beautiful it was! The drive to Elbasan is beautiful through the mountains and there are some beautiful views from our hotel windows once you're in the town, but I wouldn't exactly describe it as a beautiful city (sorry, Elbasani friends!).

We first stopped at the New York hotel where we had some significant meals (after first meeting Ellie, then on the day we were able to take her out of the orphanage).

The water was so close, it was nearly more than Ellie could stand to not just jump in it!

(below) Now Ellie is just getting downright tortured, sure that it's all a big tease. In her defense, the meal came out quite slowly, with Nathan getting his food last after most of us had finished ours.

We then made the short drive to the "Coldwater Orphanage" to show Mom, Dad, and Ellie the place where she spent the first year and a half of her life.

The photo above is a little 'de ja vu-ish' for me (reminiscent of a photo of me peeking into Ellie's room to see her for the first time). Part of me was excited to see the place again, and part of me dreaded it. There are about 30-40% fewer kids and we only encounted three workers (two of whom we didn't recognize), so over all, it just felt very hollow. I left feeling a great sadness I can't describe. I also left with a feeling of gratitude that our son is blessed to be where he is for now. What a contrast.

Showing Ellie her sleeping room and the place where we spent so many hours on the floor playing with her. Remarkably very little had changed.

We were very nearly not allowed in, however this lady below came down when she heard the commotion of our arrival in the stairwell. It took her a few seconds, but then we could see that she remembered us. This woman was the first caregiver we ever 'met'. She was the one who held Ellie in her referral pics (click here) that we got nearly four years ago!

We finally got to the sea and Ellie couldn't be happier.

Mom and Dad are 'water' people so we were pretty sure they'd enjoy the beach. We were just sorry we didn't have more time!

Ellie quickly got over her reticence at the waves ...

Her thrill at being in the water made me so happy -- she's been beyond good for us on this trip, many days not getting to do what she'd prefer to do, but obediently going along with us for long 'sit downs' at meetings, meals at restaurants, or simply playing at a hot orphanage with few toys and no kids who understand her. Yes, we've tried to provide some entertainment by going to the frigid hotel pool, or the little kid rides at the park, but this really satisfied her deep sensory needs on many levels. I just wish we could have stayed much, much longer! I hope you can sense her enjoyment in the photos below.

If you were a blog follower back in 2006, then this photo might look familiar (click here).
I know we're headed into a weekend, however we have bunches of photos from this past week ready to share for posts tomorrow and Sunday. We said goodbye to Mom and Dad Waggoner this morning and had a couple of meetings this afternoon with Altin and our Bethany reps. We're finally back at our home base here in Tirana and thoroughly enjoying access to wireless internet, AC, a washing machine, and a kitchen! We're missing our little boy bunches and making plans for his first birthday party in one week!!!

Thursday morning in Elbasan

This morning we're headed out for a last visit with David Reni this week. We head back to Tirana as Mom and Dad are flying out tomorrow. It's up in the air right now whether or not we drive back to Tirana via Vlora as Mom and Dad are a bit under the weather. I hope to post more photos when we get back to the apartment this evening.

1 Down, 1 To Go

Because I know you are all anxious to hear about this morning, I'm squeezing in a bit of time online between lunch and leaving for our afternoon visit to the orphanage. This morning we passed up our traditional morning visit to the orphanage to see David Reni since we would need to leave after less than one hour to travel to the courthouse.

We took a cab and waited in a coffee shop across the street from where everything would be happening. I thought it was interesting that the three coffee shops didn't even have names posted on the front -- by their mere location they probably do good business.

(Above) Waiting to meet our Tirana 'team' (Altin, Agim and Mom VO)
(Below) Waiting to be allowed in the court house

One funny sidenote while sitting on the benches above, the security officer (female) who initially carried a rather official air, warmed up quickly after deciding that I resemble her daughter. She pulled out her cell phone and showed me photo after photo of her daughter. What do you say in that situation? "Wow! What a beautiful daughter you have!" ????

We were finally told we could go inside, then waited some more in the corridor outside the judge's office. Personally I was relieved that we were meeting in her office and not in a courtroom (as was the case for Ellie). The 'informality' of an office seemed less intimidating. The actual encounter with the judge went quite quickly and we didn't even have to speak with her though an official court translator was provided (and Agim, Altin, and Sister Rosetta are all fluent English speakers). We just signed our names as having been present and agreed to meet again next Wednesday at 12:30PM when she announces her official decision. It lasted not even five minutes once everyone was assembled.
If everything goes as planned, the adoption decree can be issued no sooner than August 12 or 13. Thank you for praying for this detail, as well as praying for this morning's proceedings.
This is a DOUBLE POSTER day. Don't miss pics from yesterday's trip to the orphanage!

Tuesday's visit to see David Reni

Thanks, Lilly, for this great photo!

He loved the swing, but it was obviously lulling him to sleep, so he didn't stay in for long.

Nonna brought books, of course! We love this pic!

We took DR on his first stroller ride. Ellie had a great time pushing him!

Each child has his or her own shelf for clothes.

Here we are checking out his emerging teeth

I included this photo to show how Ellie wants to do whatever we're doing with David. ;-)

Ellie requested this pose.

Monday night Kerri told us about this missionary child (Joel) who had a burden to pray for David to be adopted. We were pleased when he dropped in yesterday afternoon and we had the opportunity to meet him and take David's photo with him!

Shume Buker! (Very Beautiful!)

Last night our new friend Kerri showed us an unexpected jewel in the heart of Elbasan. We drive by the ruins of the ancient city wall on a daily basis, but we didn't know that if you go through a gate and walk down a steep staircase, you descend into another world that's green and quiet!

Inside the walls one finds an oasis of flowers and plants as well as scattered relics.

Here we are awaiting our supper. What a relaxing way to spend the evening! Our eyes couldn't take in all there was to see and enjoy. We remarked that we felt like we were in Italy or Greece.

It's a treat to show a little bit of Albania to Mom and Dad Waggoner. By the way, their luggage arrived!
This was my supper "Cannelloni with spinach and cheese"

Kerri surprised us with this baby photo of David Reni that she found on her cell phone. This was taken sometime this past fall.

If you ever find yourself in this corner of the world, we recommend a visit here! We want to return!

David Reni has 2 Grannies Too! (and a PaPa & a Gjyshi)

The past 48 hours have been FULL! This morning we drove straight to Elbasan and happened to catch the Sisters putting David Reni in a cab to attend a doctor's appointment for an immunization. We had a hasty impromptu introduction with Nana and PaPa on the curb!

Ellie is telling her brother goodbye and be brave for your shot!

We went back to the orphanage this afternoon after naptime and enjoyed some time with the kiddos. So much to show Nana and PaPa at the orphanage!

This evening we had supper with Kerri in the ancient city wall ruins. The gardens were stunning and we were in constant amazement at our surroundings. Just gorgeous! I will post thos pics tomorrow!
Thank you for continuing to follow our story and activities. Having a wonderful time with family in town!
