Aiming for a good start to 2022

Reni received this fantastic dart set for Christmas.  Nathan installed it in the kids' room -- though we may not have thought through the placement.  It's best to announce your arrival before entering lest any darts might be sailing through the air!

New Years means home visits to dear friends!

New years = establishing new habits!  Like more reading time!  This makes my heart happy!

When your place is where all the kids hang out and play hard, they get thirsty.  We've tried many solutions to reduce plastic cup waste... but lugging these boxes of bottles from place to place has been a bit cumbersome, so we replaced these boxes with a trolley cart.  Below, Nathan assembles it with a little help from a friend.  I love that he's always teaching!

Long winter nights showed our need for lights around the new center.  We have been pleased with the extra sense of safety and security they provide!

On January 13, Bonnie and Peder arrived for 2.5 months to give us a hand in the village!
Below, Bonnie assists with crafts at Kids' Club.

They even helped us move a friend into a new home!

Bonnie has helped us get the store room in ship shape!

A few days later we were happy to celebrate the birthday of a dear friend!

The kalceto has been such a blessing, especially in the winter months when it can be rainy and cold.  It's so nice to have a place for the kids to play, regardless of the weather!

The local public school honored us at a special conference discussing the issue of bullying.  It was in appreciation for our long-standing work with the kids of the community to provide healthy activities and teaching.

(below) Just because they matched. :-)

(below) ... just because he looked 'cool' in his long scarf and carefully coordinated sporty ensemble.

Thanks to the generosity of God's people, with the year-end giving we were able to install the safety railing on the rooftop terrace of the new center.  The view is amazing but the low wall height meant we haven't had it open for general use yet. Thanks to the railing, we can now open the terrace for visitors of all ages!

It's so exciting to see the Albanian translation of The Chosen series start to spread.  I received this text from a friend in Tirana...

I posted this photo below on Instagram, but I'm sharing it here again because it's funny how one gets unexpected reminders of lost loved one.  In this case, the rubber rat below was found in a box of things in our store room.  I'm 99% sure that my Dad brought it here to use as a prank (once in my childhood he infamously placed a furry mouse cat toy in between the sheets of my mom's side of the bed to scare her).  He would love to know that this little rubber rat has been making the rounds of the center, appearing in cabinets and drawers to startle unsuspecting visitors.

Rainy days mean no line drying outside and that our living room turns into a jeans drying station!

One Sunday in January we were so happy that our friends refuging in Albania could take a bus to Tirana to join us for a day.

Bonnie and Peder joined us and we took everyone up the cable car on Mt. Dajti for a special experience.

We couldn't have asked for better weather to enjoy the view!

This friendship has been a special surprise and blessing.  It's unbelievable that God crossed our paths through one of my former college roommates and we have the opportunity to hear their story.  Please keep them and all the people from Afghanistan in your prayers.

Unwrapping December 2021

December FLEW by for us!  Here is a photo-recap of one of our favorite months of the year!

I am honored to take the annual Christmas photos for the staff and residents of the Hope Center!  Below, Nathan captures me wearing my 'photographer hat.'

Below, the real photo:

Following the group photo and all the various combinations of groups, we moved into the kitchen where we decorated cookies that Nathan had previously baked.

We said goodbye to our dear friends, Gordon and Carol, who came for two weeks and helped us with Handmade in Albania orders.  Below, we enjoyed coffees and hot chocolates by a woodstove while we waited for the Covid PCR test results to come in prior to their return flight to Texas.

Below: we made Christmas tree ornaments one Saturday during kids club.

Below, Ellie rehearses with Luli for music that the kids will perform for the Christmas Eve service.

Below, we said 'goodbye' to Sara, the PT for VT who is emigrating to Germany. It's a hard reality of living in Albania.  The concept of 'brain drain' is real.

That makes us all the more appreciative of our friends like Eda and Luli (below) who feel called to remain in their country and minister to their friends and neighbors.  One Sunday afternoon they came over to help us with the ever present job in December of making Christmas cookies. Because of Covid in 2020 and our furlough in 2019, this was the first time in three years that we've made Christmas cookies to share with our friends.  It was a fun tradition to resurrect!

Another evening we watched "Christmas with the Chosen" and decorated the baked cookies over at the church.  We would need to bake and decorate nearly 300 cookies to distribute on Christmas Eve!

Another big project in December was the opportunity to help coordinate the translation of Christmas with The Chosen. We got to play around with a new translation platform that made tracking progress a lot of fun!

One Saturday evening we received a frantic message from our new Afghan friends that their son had been hospitalized.  We made a trip up to their city the next day to see what we could do to help and offer moral support.

We were so glad to see he was doing better!

Reni received the shirt below as a Christmas gift and wore it several days in a row.

We were invited to the Christmas dinner at the Hope Center.  It was a really special event to be invited to!

The photo below might be puzzling, but let me provide context.  We had not had a toilet seat since late September because we could not find one that fit our toilet!  When our plumber finally tracked one down a week before Christmas I couldn't resist snapping the pic below.  My early Christmas gift!

Another round of Christmas cookie decorating for Christmas eve!

The night before my birthday we braved the traffic to see the lights in the center of Tirana.

There are a large number of booths selling drinks and sausage and other foods.  We enjoyed something to eat then rode some rides!

It was also one of the coldest nights in almost a year, so we were a bit foolhardy to do something that made us colder!

This was Reni's first time ever driving his own bumper car because he finally has legs long enough to reach the gas pedal!

He was a pro!

A waffle, on a stick, dipped in chocolate?  Um, yes please!

For my birthday we went to the mall for last minute Christmas shopping, then we met our friends, the Dukas, and watched Spiderman and had coffee and dessert!

Christmas Eve found us grateful to celebrate the birth of Christ with a packed house.  Below, Shpresa, Luli and I are filling plates with the post-service refreshments.

Nathan greets our guests

We watched a clip from The Shepherd at the end.

On Christmas morning, Reni read from Luke 2 and we opened gifts with Pam.

She made Reni this pillow featuring the Millenium Falcon.

Her fingers were obviously busy with all the handmade gifts she made us!

I was in heaven just playing games and assembling a puzzle after our brunch.

Later in the afternoon, the Dukas joined us and we decorated cookies together and enjoyed Christmas dinner and games.

It was a wonderful Christmas day!
