Four Ways to Eat a Hot Dog

We had two Sundays of church services in Vermont which meant we had a whole glorious week to spend with my sister, Bug, and her family (clarification: we took a side trip over to Maine for an overnight to see some special people, so technically it wasn't an entire week, but it's more time than we usually get with the Shaws -- blog post on Maine coming up).

After several weeks on the road with Winnie, we wanted to share some of the perks of RV life with Bug, Seth and the girls and so I thought a camping trip would make for some fun and special memories for the kids, since they usually only see each other at Christmas time.

The biggest deterrant to my grand plan was finding a place to GO!  Given that warm weather doesn't usually reach Vermont until, like, JUNE (and 'warm' is a relative term), I discovered that most of the State parks didn't open for several more weeks! Gulp. We finally found a campground that was within an hour's drive and arrived on their first day open for the season.

When we pulled into the campground, my sister started laughing.  Like the hold-your-stomach-and-wipe-your-tears-laughing.  If you don't know my sister and brother-in-law, they were the founding members of the Asbury Outdoors club on campus.  They go camping with nothing but the clothes on their back, a pack, water bottle, and maybe a sleeping bag to go wander up a mountain for a few days.  All of a sudden, as we drove up to our space with a small piece of grass, an electrical box and water spigot, I realized how 'lame' campground 'camping' looked.

But not to be deterred, we pulled out the food and started a fire.  In a ring.  Made out of an old tire rim, I think.  Yeah, they probably don't have those out in Nature either.  Oh well.  It was a get-away.

The kids started eating and true to their four unique personalities, they each had their own way to eat a hot dog.

YUM!

Okay, so maybe it's not 'camping' when you have hot water in your sink and a furnace to keep you warm when you sleep, or electricity to project a movie on the side of your RV for entertainment, but we made memories we won't soon forget.  Love you guys!
